The Painting Experience is bringing its program of the same name, a five-day immersion retreat featuring process painting, to north Georgia from May 12 to 17 at the Elohee Center in Sautee Nacoochee, which is about 90 miles from Atlanta.

Process painting is a nonverbal practice that enables participants to explore their creativity “in an atmosphere that is noncompetitive and nonjudgmental.” The program is designed to sharpen one’s intuitive vision and promote courage in following one’s passion and taking risks.

Stewart Cubley, who founded The Painting Experience in 1976, has taught throughout the world, including at Esalen and the Omega Institute. The Painting Experience’s website states that “his method is one of respectful questioning, inviting you to extend yourself into new areas of thought and feeling.”

The Elohee retreat will be led by senior facilitator Matt Belay. He studied landscape architecture at Virginia Tech, where he specialized in community design. While a student there, he organized art and creativity workshops that included the poet, potter and educator M.C. Richards and the choreographer Merce Cunningham.

Retreat fees range from $1,257 to $1,605 depending upon accommodations. For more information, visit elohee.org or call 770-316-9195.
