GETTING TO THE ROOT OF EARTH DAY

Pelvic Yoga Corresponds to Chakra Work

This month, Natural Awakenings joins the world in celebrating Earth Day, a time to increase awareness of our relationship with our home, planet Earth.
Leslie Howard’s article this month on the pelvic floor comes to us at an opportune time.

According to yoga, our external environment is a projection of our inner environment. Yoga is all about awareness, and Howard’s article focuses our attention on the hips, buttocks and pelvic floor. ese parts of the body correspond with the first chakra, known as muladhara, or root chakra. e corresponding element of the root chakra is the earth.

There are seven major chakras, which are centers for the reception, storage and distribution of prana (life force). You’ll never find a chakra in a CT scan. Chakras are located in what’s known as the “subtle body,” and yogis know that our chakras affect our physical and emotional bodies, and our bodies affect our chakras.

Howard’s teachings have the potential to awaken the intelligence in this important and open neglected part of our physical and subtle bodies. As we deepen our relationship with our roots, our relationship with the earth correspondingly improves.

This truth is revealed in the Chandogya Upanishad: “Within the human body, there is a small shrine. And within that shrine there is a lotus and in that lotus there is a small space. What exists in that small space in the heart of the lotus, that is to be understood. As large as is the space which contains the whole universe, so large is that space within the heart. Both heaven and earth are contained within it, re and air, sun and moon, and lightning and stars; whatever there is here in the world, and whatever is not, all that is contained within it.”

Chakras can provide a map for progressively enhancing inner and outer ecology. ey can be a template for understand- ing our world and our place in it, for healing, for growth and for remembering our true nature.

Over the next several issues, we will take a journey through the chakras. Insights await.
