The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will award Environmental Justice Small Grants to two Atlanta organizations: Atlanta’s Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and Trees Atlanta.

EPA’s Environmental Justice Small Grants provide funding for nonprofit and tribal organizations working with communities to address environmental justice issues, according to the US EPA press release. The program funds projects up to $30,000 a year.

The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper was awarded $30,000 for its project Neighborhood Water Watch (NWW). According to Chattahoochee.org, many streams flowing through Atlanta’s neighborhoods are polluted with high levels of E. coli due to cracked and overflowing sewers. NWW volunteers monitor these streams, collect data and educate people on how to improve water.

Project partners include Adopt-A-Stream, City of Atlanta, Proctor Creek Stewardship Council and the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance.

Trees Atlanta, according to the EPA, was also awarded a Justice Grant for the project Youth Tree Team (YTT) Internship Program.

The YTT is a team of high school students that works for seven weeks in June and July weeding, mulching, pruning and planting along the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum and neighborhoods. The YTT also participates in leadership and team-building activities, receives job-skills training, learns financial management skills and networks with green-focused professionals, according to TreesAtlanta.org
