Atlanta Farmers’ Markets CONTINUE TO GROW
From pop-up tents in parking lots and alleys to multicultural mainstays, Greater Atlanta cultivates a variety of farmers’ markets.
The Buford Highway Farmers’ Market and Dekalb Farmers’ Market have both been around for more than 30 years. While they are indoor markets, they do emphasize local farm produce. Their claim to fame is the variety of vendors offering food and wares from around the world.
For wholesale shopping, visit the 150-acre the Atlanta State Farmer’s Market, just southeast of the airport. Open 24 hours a day for shipping and receiving, vendors to the general public are open mostly between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. The terminal market also contains a Georgia welcome center, rental space and restaurant.
The traditional famers’ market, best perused with a slow stroll through open air stalls with a basket in hand, is still very much alive in Atlanta, according to Carol Anderson Wood, manager of the Alpharetta Famers’ Market. “Weather makes a difference,” she says. “If it’s beautiful, it’s continuous from the time we open to the time we close—500, 1,000, 1,500 [visitors].”
Here is list of farmers’ markets in the 10 counties identified by the Atlanta Regional Commission as Greater Atlanta, compiled from the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Wholesome Wave Georgia (WWG) and Community Farmers’ Markets Atlanta. Partners within the WWG program, which doubles Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food dollars for recipients up to $50, are noted.
