February 2017 Publisher’s Letter – Going Out is Going In

I only went out for a walk, and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found was really going in. ~ John Muir

Just recently, I stumbled across a catchy phrase that seems to follow me everywhere I go now, “Let’s wander where the WIFI is weak.” I’ve adopted it as my new life mission, boldly plotting a year to explore more wild places where the internet and electronic devices are impotent. Inspired to join that quest? Here are some fantastic wild yet still accessible Atlanta area resources to get you started:

  • Sweetwater Creek State Park. Located just outisde I-285 on the west side. Hike through ruggedly beautiful landscape, past tumbling rapids, waterfalls, cliffs, rolling meadow and lush forest. GAStateParks.org/SweetwaterCreek.
  • Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. A mostly-bald, rounded dome offering beautiful panoramic views to hikers who make its summit. Hike, bike or walk over 30 miles of trails through cascading waterfalls, lakes, forests and open grassy meadows. ArabiaAlliance.org/explore.
  • Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. 48 miles of of unique adventures and beautiful natural views along the Chattahoochee River. For locations and walking paths, nps.gov/chat.
  • Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Steeped in history, this park offers nearly 3,000 acres of natural beauty accessed by 22 miles of trails. nps.gov/kemo.
  • If the unpredictable weather of February intimidates, just remember what a wise elder once told me, “There is no bad weather, just bad clothing.” So, suit up, turn off your electronic devices, and get outside!

Here’s to a year of wandering where the WIFI is weak and the connections are more meaningful!
