Folklife Festival Takes Visitors Back to the Old South

The Fall Folklife Festival, hosted by the Atlanta History Center, will be held September 27 at the centuries-old Smith Family Farm, celebrating Southern food, brews, friends and family and the joy of making memories. Guests can spend the day exploring the 33-acre campus and learning how Southerners practiced sustainability while preparing for the changing of the seasons in years past. A variety of demonstrations will teach time-honored crafts which were essential to the antebellum lifestyle. Presentations include cooking, canning, gardening and using local crops, as well as metal work in the farm’s fully operational blacksmith shop. Visitors can participate in candle-dipping and woodworking, visit the petting zoo and explore six historic gardens displaying beautiful autumn plants.

Other activities include demonstrations and discussion of the history and culture of Southern Food scheduled throughout the day, which can be followed up by tasting delicious locally made refreshments. Award-winning author, editor and journalist Joseph Earl Dabney will talk about the history of moonshining.
